The firefighters were trapped while trying to extinguish a wildfire on Kornat island, on Croatia's central Adriatic Coast. The island is the largest in the Kornati archipelago of 150 islands, covering 320 kilometres square of sea off Zadar, 300 kilometres south of Zagreb. The fire, one of hundreds that have hit Croatia's coast this summer, erupted early Thursday afternoon. Wildfires were also reported in other regions. Stipe Bozic, head of the mountain rescue service, told national television HTV that the entire unit was trapped in an area covered by tall, dry grass. Bozic said the area was uninhabited criticized the decision to send the men there. "It is the worst tragedy I ever saw," said Bozic, who has been engaged in rescue operations over more than two decades. Local reports said that Prime Minister Ivo Sanade r was on a plane to make an emergency visit to the area. The dead and injured firefighters were transported to hospitals on mainland. The most seriously injured were due to be transferred to Zagreb by road, because their condition was too poor for a flight. One other firefighter has been killed in fires this year. Police in the nearby city of Sibenik only confirmed that 14 firefighters were injured at the island of Kornat and there was no immediate official confirmation of the deaths. Zeljko Sosa, a local firefighting official, said the wind apparently suddenly changed its course, spreading the fire that then trapped the firefighters inside the firing circle. Private TV RTL said all five dead were members of the local volunteering firefighting brigade and that they were in their 20s. Among the 14 injured, four are in a life-threatening condition, said a doctor on duty in the clinic in Zadar, a city on the coast across from Kornat where most of the injured are being treated. He spoke on customary condition of anonymity. Prime Minister Ivo Sanader was heading to Zadar to visit those injur ed overnight, the government said in a statement. The fire was still raging on the island, which has only hundreds of residents. Croatia has battled a record number of fires this summer, but mostly only in forests. Before Thursday's incident at Kornat, a firefighter who died Wednesday while putting down the fire on another island, was the only casualty of those fires.
